{"id":11,"date":"2011-02-06T23:35:12","date_gmt":"2011-02-06T23:35:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ussmasseyassociation.org\/redesign\/?page_id=11"},"modified":"2021-07-06T15:29:00","modified_gmt":"2021-07-06T15:29:00","slug":"reunions","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ussmasseyassociation.org\/?page_id=11","title":{"rendered":"Reunions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong> Why Go To A Reunion?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you are a former MASSEY sailor, you know what the camaraderie of shipboard life is all about.\u00a0 Going to sea in a \u201csmall boy\u201d is a unique and often challenging experience.\u00a0 There are few life experiences that can match life aboard a \u201cTin Can\u201d of MASSEY\u2019s vintage\u2026 riding out a storm for days on end, refueling at \u201cO-Dark Thirty\u201d off an oiler, freezing or sweating in cramped berthing compartments, spending hours at General Quarters (GQ) or enjoying a greasy \u201cslider\u201d at Mid-Rats.\u00a0 At a young age you learn to work as a team and you develop relationships that bridge a lifetime whether you do a 4 year tour or serve a full career (a Lifer!).\u00a0 There are few fields of endeavor in civilian life that create the trust and bond that develops between Navy Shipmates.\u00a0 The majority of our <a href=\"https:\/\/ussmasseyassociation.org\/redesign\/?page_id=40\">members from MASSEY\u2019s 1944 commissioning<\/a> to her <a href=\"https:\/\/ussmasseyassociation.org\/redesign\/?page_id=67\">decommissioning in 1973<\/a> served their tour and then returned to civilian life.\u00a0 So why do they go to a reunion?\u00a0 You only need to attend one to see a sea of smiling faces, watch old friendships and memories rekindled, and once again hear the great \u201cSea Stories\u201d that seem to get better every year!\u00a0 Shipmates back together again!<\/p>\n<p><strong>What makes the MASSEY Association reunions special? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So what makes the MASSEY Association reunions special? Well they are literally a Massey Family reunion with the namesake Massey Family often joining MASSEY Shipmates for the get together.\u00a0 Other reunion associations rarely have the honor and pleasure of having the ship\u2019s namesake family members present at a reunion.\u00a0 The MASSEY Association is often uniquely blessed with the presence of CDR Lance Massey USN (ret), son of the ship\u2019s namesake; his gracious Navy wife, Judy; and their son, Capt Lance Massey.\u00a0 A MASSEY reunion is truly a multi-generation family experience!<\/p>\n<p>MASSEY reunions occur annually\u2026 unless Mother Nature intervenes.\u00a0 The membership votes at the annual business meeting on the location of the next reunion and the follow on reunion 2 years out.\u00a0 The association\u2019s Reunion Planning Committee then starts the planning process that works every detail from accommodations to the schedule of events.\u00a0 The latter includes tours of historic sites, visits to local attractions, a Memorial Service to remember fallen shipmates, and plenty of socialization time in the \u201cHospitality Room\u201d. On the tours, the Planning Committee is ever mindful that we don\u2019t have the \u201cSea Legs\u201d of past days so mobility accommodations are always factored in.<\/p>\n<p>The reunion is a multi-day event with Day 1 being a PM check in at the hotel and a welcome gathering at the Hospitality Room; Day 2 through Days 3 or 4 are dedicated to tours\/events; and the last day is usually breakfast and check out.\u00a0 Reunion dates are picked to allow the best possible hotel rates matched to moderate weather typically in Spring or early Fall.\u00a0 There is no requirement to attend the whole schedule of events.\u00a0 There is a Sign Up Form included in the association newsletter that allows you to make your choice of tours\/events to attend.\u00a0 Remember you must be a member to attend a reunion!\u00a0 To join up, click on one of the links on this site or the <a href=\"https:\/\/ussmasseyassociation.org\/redesign\/?page_id=4\"><strong><em>Join The Crew<\/em><\/strong><\/a> menu above to take you to the Membership Form.\u00a0\u00a0 Lastly you can join up when you fill out the Reunion Sign Up Sheet!\u00a0 It\u2019s the best $10 investment you\u2019ll ever make!<\/p>\n<p>Wives and family members find these reunions a great shared experience and are welcome to join in this annual tradition!\u00a0 To give you a flavor of a reunion, at Left are After Action Reports on each reunion held to date.\u00a0 Click on any of them and you will see former MASSEY shipmates, who served on her through three wars and four decades, together again for a fun event.\u00a0 Come join us at the next reunion!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Why Go To A Reunion?
