{"id":270,"date":"2011-02-15T02:03:28","date_gmt":"2011-02-15T02:03:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ussmasseyassociation.org\/redesign\/?page_id=270"},"modified":"2021-07-06T15:30:14","modified_gmt":"2021-07-06T15:30:14","slug":"after-action-traverse-city-2008-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ussmasseyassociation.org\/?page_id=270","title":{"rendered":"After Action \u2013 Traverse City 2008"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 2008 reunion hosted by Gordon and Teri Risk was a great success.\u00a0 Our stay at the Holiday Inn West-Bay was very enjoyable and accommodations were excellent.\u00a0 The weather could have cooperated more, but we survived with our MASSEY shirts and jackets to protect us.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sunday, September 28, 2008<br \/>\n<\/strong>The activities began with our registration, followed by a get-acquainted gathering in the hospitality suite.\u00a0 Reunion and tour information packets were available in the hospitality suite.\u00a0 Dinner at various local establishments was on our own.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Monday September 29, 2008<br \/>\n<\/strong>We met for breakfast in the hospitality suite so as to be fully energized for our trip to Mackinac Island.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0We departed the hotel at 0800 and arrived back at 1830.<\/p>\n<p>Transportation\u2013<strong>bus, ferry boat, and horse-drawn carriage tours<\/strong> with guides, were part of the tour.<\/p>\n<p>Some 47 of us enjoyed the guest privileges of the Grand Hotel public spaces, with the world\u2019s longest veranda, and the Grand Luncheon Buffet in the dining room.<\/p>\n<p>Back at our hotel, we spread out to various restaurants for excellent dinners.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tuesday, September 30, 2008<br \/>\n<\/strong>After a leisurely breakfast in our private hospitality suite, we boarded our buses and visited the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park and the last existing Life Saving Station.\u00a0 Both were very picturesque and interesting to visit.<\/p>\n<p>Afterwards, we had lunch at the Bluebird Restaurant in Leland and explored Fishtown Harbor.\u00a0 Fishtown has only three other equals in charm and history in all North America.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wednesday, October 1, 2008<br \/>\n<\/strong>Today, we stayed in Traverse City.\u00a0 Our annual business meeting was held at 1000.\u00a0 The memorial service was held, at 1500<strong>, <\/strong>at the Merchant Marine Academy.<\/p>\n<p>At 1600, we split into two groups to tour The Great Lakes Maritime Academy and the SS Michigan training ship.\u00a0 Our banquet reception was at 1730, followed by the banquet at 1900.<\/p>\n<p>Reunion attendees:\u00a0 Bernie and Mary Jane Barilla; Charlie and Jean Weaver; Jack Zagaros and Pat Loyd; Caroline Zucco and sons.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Annual Business Meeting<br \/>\n<\/strong>The annual business meeting was held at the Holiday Inn West-Bay, Traverse City, Michigan on October 1, 2008 at 1000.\u00a0 With a quorum of officers present, the meeting was called to order by President Phil Smith.\u00a0 Phil led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag and in prayer.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Old Business<br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong>The last business meeting was held in 2006.\u00a0 The reading of the minutes of that meeting was waived, and the minutes were filed.\u00a0 There was no 2007 business meeting, as a quorum of officers was not present on the reunion cruise.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>New Business<br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong>Treasurer Don Heenan gave the financial report of income and expenses.\u00a0 The Treasury had a sufficient balance to handle all projected reunion expenses as of September 30, 2008.\u00a0 The report was accepted and filed.<\/p>\n<p>Procurement and Supply Officer, Wilson Walters reported that sales of MASSEY gear at the reunion totaled $1,110.\u00a0 He also informed all that supply was pretty well exhausted; but items could still be ordered by contacting him at (724) 258-9223 or\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:wcwalters2000@yahoo.com\">wcwalters2000@yahoo.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The president read into the record a letter from Tom Potoskie, host of the 2007 reunion, summarizing that reunion, as no business meeting was held.<\/p>\n<p>Letters of thanks from Bernie and Mary Jane Barilla and from Carolyn Zucco were read.<\/p>\n<p>The following slate of officers was placed in nomination for the bi-annual election of Association Officers:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0President\u2014Tom Potoskie<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0Vice President\u2014Bernie Barilla<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0Secretary\/Editor\u2014Jerry Goodson<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0Treasurer\u2014Don Heenan<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0Historian\u2014Gordon Risk<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0Master-at-Arms\u2014Paul Pavone<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0Procurement &amp; Supply\u2014Wilson Walters<\/p>\n<p>All were unanimously elected by voice vote.\u00a0 All will also serve as the Executive Committee, as will Phil Smith as Past President.<\/p>\n<p>A proposal from the floor to present a plaque to Tom Potoskie in recognition of the his service to the association was made and approved by voice vote.\u00a0 Judy Massey volunteered to produce and forward the plaque.<\/p>\n<p>Juan de la Cruz gave a presentation on the proposal of San Antonio, TX as the site of the 2009 reunion.\u00a0 After discussion, the site was approved.\u00a0 Juan will be our host.<\/p>\n<p>Proposals were solicited from the floor for sites for the 2010 reunion.\u00a0 Two were proposed: Hot Springs, Arkansas, and Charleston, South Carolina.\u00a0 After discussion, a vote was taken and Charleston, SC was selected.\u00a0 Tom and Carole Norman volunteered to host this reunion.<\/p>\n<p>There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 2008 reunion hosted by Gordon and Teri Risk was a great success.\u00a0 Our stay at the Holiday Inn West-Bay was very enjoyable and accommodations were excellent.\u00a0 The weather could have cooperated more, but we survived with our MASSEY shirts and jackets to protect us.
